five with frights:- SCARE-A-TORIUM
-
KELLY COLLINS runs one of the number one haunt attractions in the Mid-West and dare I say in the nation.
-
MR. FRIGHTS: How much time a year do you spend preparing?-
KELLY COLLINS: We’ll start planning as soon as the season is over on the next year’s attraction. So probably 6 – 8 months planning and then about a month for construction. This year was great because we were able to keep our haunt up all year in storage.
MR. FRIGHTS: Can you tell us one of your favorite stories about scaring someone?-
KELLY COLLINS: We have a scene at the Scare-A-Torium that gets mentioned by 8 out of 10 visitors as one of their favorite scenes. I won’t give away which scene it is, but I will tell you it is in the Funhouse. People really jump and scream when they’re in this scene and it’s fun to watch them.
MR. FRIGHTS: Are your people trained to blend in if there would happen to be an actual Zombie Apocalypse?-
KELLY COLLINS: Oh that sounds like fun. We do hold extensive training classes for our actors. We’ve found this helps to ensure our performers are the best in central Ohio.
MR. FRIGHTS: Can you tell us a little (summary) about some of the talent behind the Scare-A-Torium?-
KELLY COLLINS: I’ve been acting, operating and designing haunted attractions for 26 years. I was a consultant for Terror Park at Cooper Stadium for 10 years. We were rated one of the top attractions in the state of Ohio.
- My wife, Neena, is an acclaimed face painter and makeup artists. She oversees our accounting and operations. We have a fantastic management support group who’ve been with us for many years. We have teams to assist with planning and implementation of tasks.
- We spend the last two months meeting weekly for team updates on the status of projects. Some of our actors have been performing with me for 20+ years. Our actors at Scare-A-Torium have been rated as the best costumed actors in Ohio.
MR. FRIGHTS: What are the inspirations for the props and decorations and characters throughout the haunt?-
KELLY COLLINS: Our theme is a collection of fears and so we have over 30 scenes representing a variety of scares. We discuss the haunt plans with our teams and we always looking for unique props and decorations.

GRAB BAG QUESTIONS
MR. FRIGHTS: Is there a limit to how much you'll scare someone?-
KELLY COLLINS: Yes, we believe there is a line and we train our actors not to cross that line. We’re there to entertain them and show everyone a good time. We’ll scare them, but we won’t terrorize someone intentionally. We want them to come back with their friends.
MR. FRIGHTS: What would your first reaction be if one of the undead accidentally (because it would be a fitting environment just by chance) set up his/her home there?-
KELLY COLLINS: We wouldn’t get my wife back in the building and that would create a real problem for me. We’re in a 55,000 sq ft building and it makes some strange noises. My wife thinks its haunted.
MR. FRIGHTS: Do you purchase any blood used in the haunted attraction or do you literally squeeze it from the employees?-
KELLY COLLINS: I believe our team members would tell you we are the best haunt to perform with. We treat our team members well and provide a climate controlled environment, a well lit makeup room with fantastic makeup artists to assist them and we meet often for training and we go out to have fun. They join us in parades and at festivals and events.
MR. FRIGHTS: Do you think you'd be safe from Bruce Campbell if someone were to call him up to help eradicate your monstrous minions?-
KELLY COLLINS: Are you kidding; Bruce Campbell? I love Bubba Ho-Tep. I say bring ‘em on.
MR. FRIGHTS: Is there time for people to go on a mini-vacation to haunted New Orleans or is Scare-A-Torium here and gone?-
KELLY COLLINS: This will be our second year for the Scare-A-Torium. We see ourselves operating a haunt for the next 10-15 years.
MR. FRIGHTS: Do you ever have special guest monsters?-
KELLY COLLINS: Through my many years in this industry; I’ve met many fantastic actors. Each season a number of them visit our attraction to have fun entertaining our guests. With our theme and variety of fears, many characters fit in well with our scenes. Our crew is probably one of the best out there, but we always appreciate time spent with guest actors. We appreciate seeing new characters and acting styles. They inspire my actors to try harder.
