ill titleBooks

Many people enjoy a good read, some enjoy it more when it's scary or creepy. Here you'll find some of my personal suggestions to get that chill going in your veins.

Dracula Spectacular

Not your typical book, "Dacula Spectacular" by David Mostyn, folds out to 5 feet tall and is rigged with metal ringlets to hang up on a wall if so desired. The fold-out is packed with fun little things to read and some things to play with (like a reflectionless mirror) and will keep kids and adults busy for a while learning about vampires, more specifcally about Dracula. It seems that some have had trouble folding the book back up, but I had no trouble, just be careful and pay attention to how you unfolded it to begin with.

in a dark dark room

"In A Dark Dark Room and Other Scary Stories" is one of the first horror type books I ever read way back when I was a wee lad. It left enough of an impact that I remembered its tales all these years later (i.e. the girl who wore a ribbon around her neck) and often use them to spook my own child and any others who dare to listen. The artwork in this book also left an impression because that's how I found the right book. I couldn't remember the title at first and so I relied on my memory of the creepy drawings to get me there. While this is a great book for kids (as it's a 'Learn to read' book) it's also a great read for adults.

how to speak zombie

"How To Speak Zombie" by Steve Mockus is a great book for kids and zombie loving adults. The book takes you through a series of phrases as spoken by zombies with translations into English. Not just that, but the book features a button unit where you press the corresponding button to each phrase to hear how the phrase is said in zombie dialect!

the MOST haunted house

"The MOST Haunted House" is a fun pop-up style book that if full of what is essentially 3D windows with spooky things poking out from different places. Kids will love this one as much as the others on this page. The book's pictures take you on a literal point of view journey up to a spooky old house and inside the house up to a creepy cabinet that you have to open to see what creature lurks inside (I won't spoil it for you).

Vampyre the terrifying lost journal of dr. conelius van helsing

"Vampyre The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing" is one of those series of super fun books that actually is a collection of different things that pull out, pop up, reflect, and other assorted things all surrounding the fun topic of the book. In this case, vampires! Hands down a great addition for any kid who loves the fun in horror and/or Halloween, and not bad for adults that enjoy this kind of fun too!

Goodnight Goon

"Goodnight Moon" is a well knows kids book that's been a favorite in my home for a while. The thing is, in my home we like things a bit more creepy and spooky. Well, thanks to author/illustrator Michael Rex we've been able to enjoy an extremely well done alternative for folks just like us! "Goodnight Goon" is the perfect book for Halloween and it's going to become a staple of our bedtime routine. Pick up a copy. And if you like this one, also check out Michael Rex's latest work "Runaway Mummy".

Witches Night Before Halloween

"Witches Night Before Halloween" is another great book for people who celebrate the fun of our favorite holiday. Just as Clement Clarke Moore's "'T'was the Night Before Christmas" is read on Christmas Eve as is tradition in many homes, I feel Lesley Pratt Bannatyne's "Witches Night Before Halloween" should become just as cherished a read for Halloween Eve (or any other day you feel a little ghoulish).
